“Blossoming Dubai” Competition for ThyssenKrupp Jan 2009

In collaboration with Petra Architects we entered the architectural competition for ThyssenKrupp in Dubai in order to create a building that would stand as a Landmark for ThyssenKrupp, in Za'abeel Park.

We based our design on the form of a blossoming flower. the tower is equipped with two elevators running on spiral rails (spiral of the most simple geometry turning 135 degrees while ascending 138 meters). These lifts ascend from lower ground floor (where the visitors enter) to the cafeteria level and the viewing platform above. Apart from the previously mentioned elevators that can cover all visitor access (including disabled access), there are also two staircases fitted in the spiraling elements of the building. The latter can be used on an emergency case.

Since day one on the design process, we decided to start modeling in 3D. From sketch models until the finalized design I felt the importance of being able to easily change and manipulate the form of the building, so I tried to use a more parametric approach, leaving headroom for the above. In Cinema 4D I was able to do so, and with great flexibility in workflow, we were able to focus more on the design process without worrying about facing modeling limitations.

Having adopted this workflow gave me enough time to add details on the building and model the landscape and surrounding environment. We then had time to focus on the views and materials for the building and gave me enough time to produce A1 size renders. After the rendering was done, the images were taken to Photoshop for post work, adding surroundings, tweaking lighting and color and compositing with people, skies and surroundings for the final presentation.
Our competition proposal has, since, been published in numerous sites such as: WorldArchitectureNews, designboom, design-r.info, design42day, World Arab Architecture, Art & Design, and also on the Concept magazine in Korea.

Residence in Hydra

This is a Work In Progress of my latest project with Nikos Kouzoupis of a house in Hydra, designed by Tsegis Architectural office. The image is rendered with Vray for Cinema 4D. I will update when I finish some more images.

Farnsworth House

Inspired by the great ArchViz pictures of Peter Guthrie, after reading his Blog,I downloaded the Farnsworth House Sketchup model and decided to have a go at it using Cinema4D and Vray. I focused mainly on the environment surrounding the building, spending more time creating the surrounding trees and grass rather than the house itself.

The scene was rendered using VrayforC4D with the help of Vrayproxies and two-sided materials for the grass and tree leaves. After that some Photoshop, mainly for color correction, sky, Levels and other tweaks to enhance the raw render.

Paros Island House

This is a Visualization test for a house in the island of Paros. I’ve received the 3D model from some friends in Archicad format and I did the Viz in Cinema 4D with AR3 and Photoshop. House Project

This is one of my latest Projects that i did for some fellow Architects. I did the visualization, they did the design. Always nice working with friends ;)

In this one I had the chance to experiment with the Mograph module in Cinema 4D 11.5 which allowed me to create high poly custom blades of grass and spread them as instances. With the new “render instances” options I could populate the scene with so many polygons of grass that would have otherwise been impossible.

Apartments in Athens 2006

This project lasted 2 months and it consists of 10 buildings located in Melissia, Athens. The 3D model was built in Archicad from the 2D CAD drawings that the Architect provided and was then textured and rendered in Cinema 4D. Some post production was also done in Photoshop, mainly for color correction and levels. Above is an image of the same model but without the materials, during the modeling and lighting stages of the project.

Born in Athens, Greece, I studied Architecture and later on 3D Design in Kent, UK, while I’ve also took courses in photography. I’ve been working as a freelance Designer for 5 years, doing mainly Architectural Visualizations.

Today, although my work is mostly connected to Architecture & Landscape, I also create Product Designs & Jewellery, Post production for Images in newspapers (Athens Voice) and I am part of the editorial team for the Architectural section in an online magazine for which I also create Design & Visualizations (grassmag). For my work I use a variety of programs like Cinema 4D, Archicad, Autocad, Sketchup, Photoshop, and the list goes on.
